The Girl Who Refused to Bury Her Mother — Part 5: The Funeral Before the Death

Six weeks after Maya broke the coffin, she sat beside Claire in a quiet meeting room at a survivor-support center where nobody closed the door.

Claire's bruises had faded, but she still kept one hand around Maya's wrist whenever footsteps paused in the hall.

Across the table, an investigator placed the black guest register beside a one-page timeline assembled from the chapel, van, and grounds-company records.

She explained that the chapel contract called the coffin ceremonial and the service venue-only, with no remains, cemetery, crematory, burial-transit permit, or licensed hearse listed.

The attendants had believed Victor's coffin was an empty display, and no grave or hearse had waited for Claire.

She pointed to only two entries: the van pickup at 4:05 p.m. and the crew's departure at 5:30, with the fenced trench left open until Monday.

Those times established the route Victor had prepared: crowded chapel, sealed coffin, private van, ninety minutes of road, and empty land after the crew had gone.

Maya left the page where it lay and remembered the commands instead.

“Move it. Now!” had not been a frightened order made after Maya heard the first thump.

“Take it out!” had not meant take Claire to a grave.

The investigator said both commands had been attempts to preserve the pickup Victor arranged before anyone could open the coffin.

No lawful burial waited at the end of that route, only a trench beyond view of the county road and a compact loader Victor knew how to operate.
