His Wife Walked Into His Wedding — Part 3: One Room, One Version

Daniel asked to speak to Madison alone.

Then he asked to speak to Claire alone.

Madison stood behind the desk with her veil folded beside her and refused both offers.

“One room,” she said.

“One version.”

Ruth took the officiant into the hallway and closed the office door behind them.

The chapel guests could wait.

For fourteen months, Daniel had given Claire and Madison different versions of the same dates.

Now they put their phones on the desk and built one calendar.

Madison began with a photograph from a Northstar Medical Systems conference in Phoenix.

She and Daniel stood beside a hotel fountain, his hand low on her back.

The photograph was fourteen months old.

Daniel had told Madison that he and Claire had been separated for nearly a year by then.

Claire remembered the date because Daniel had called her from that fountain and asked whether the plumber had fixed their kitchen sink.

They had still shared a house, a bed, and a joint grocery list.

The divorce petition would not be filed for another six months.

Madison looked at Daniel.

“You said she lived in another state.”

“We were emotionally separated.”

Claire almost laughed.

Daniel had always preferred an adjective when the noun contradicted him.

Madison opened a photograph of her engagement ring resting on a restaurant napkin.

The picture had been taken sixteen weeks earlier, one day after she told Daniel she was pregnant.

He had promised the divorce would be complete before anyone saw her in a wedding dress.

Claire placed a message beside it.

Five weeks after the proposal, Daniel had asked if he could come home for the weekend.
